Imagine you had an identical twin. You are opposites. Your twin is the most popular person at school, while you are quiet and no one at school bothers to talk to you. One day, a tragic accident eaves one of you dead, but because you both look the same, no one knows who you really are, including yourself.
This is just the beginning of the book, “The Secrets We Keep”, written by Trisha Leaver and published in 2015.
Maddy and Ella Lawton are identical twins and they are both 17 years old. Maddy is the mot popular girl at school, always involved with drama, while Ella prefers to draw quietly in her sketchbook. One night, Maddy asks Ella to pick her up from a party that she wasn’t suppose to go to. So of course, Ella goes over to pick her up, but finds Maddy cold and upset. Not known what had happened, Ella offers Maddy her sweatshirt and shoes so that she wouldn’t be cold. but as they drove home, they got into a big argument. Ella became very upset and slammed on the brakes, but they car lost control and slid uncontrollably across the road and hit a tree, leaving Maddy dead.
When Ella wakes up, she doesn’t know who she is. Everyone believes she is Maddy. Ella believes them, but soon, she finds out who she really is. She doesn’t want to tell anyone that it is really her that survived and her popular sister, that had died, so she makes a life-changing decision and pretends to be Maddy.
Pretending to be someone else isn’t easy at all, especially if you were opposites. While Ella goes through her sister’s room, she finds a box full of secrets, including something horrible that Maddy did to someone else before she died.
In my opinion, I think that “The Secrets We Keep” is a very detailed book and has lots of shocking events that will make you keep on reading! I would definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy action-packed, realistic, and sad books. Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because I would have liked to et to know Maddy a bit more before she died.
So, will Ella be able to continue to pretend she is Maddy and sacrifice all her dreams as well as her own life? What did Maddy do before she died? if you want to know the answers to these questions, I recommend that you give “The Secrets We Keep” a try! Ella is truly an amazing character, and I think everyone will enjoy reading her story of losing her twin sister.
